A warm weather perspective

"I have probably 20 nights in an Eldorado, only 5 of which were winter basecamp conditions, where it performed like a palace for one in sub -15C conditions. However, I have also used this tent (with vestibule) for summer camping with wife and dog, both back country and campground. The only downside I can name is weight/bulk. Otherwise, this is not just a winter tent, even if perhaps optimized for alpine conditions. In a rainy forest, it has performed very very well in keeping rain out and moving moisture through the fabric. Todd Tex fabric is magical. It is heavy, but condensation was never an issue. I say this because condensation is always the issue presented for avoiding single wall tents. The fabric can get wet on the insideC but it dries out very well. As far as alpine, I have used this in a proper bad windstorm, and staked out properly with guylines, it is bombproof. It is an impressive tent, and the best tent i have ever used, though not a lightweight choice."

"Took this tent for a backpacking trip around Diamond Peak a few weeks back, takes a bit of time to get used to the internal poles, but it held up great against the wind and kept me nice and comfy on the snow!"

"Lets be serious, there really isn't a better winter tent on the market, at all. This is, far and away, the only tent anyone should consider when looking at a solo shelter for cold weather work. Please understand that while im a BD pro, I am not under any pressure or offer of personal gain by speaking the truth of Eldorado. I jusy fully embrace and rely upon the product. City of gold is absolutely the correct title for this shelter, especially after a day of shoes or skis breaking trail. This system is essentially a cabin in a bag. Ultra warm, the simple to set up build, with easy pack size and low weight ensure that all those who carry their lifelines on their back will immediately increase their survivability when BD Eldorado is on board. If you have a better product for the designed aplication, please share."

Perfect tent for serious protection from the elements

"This tent met every expectation for my camp in the mountains of Colorado for nearly 2 weeks. Temperatures reached single digits at night, but I stayed relatively warm compared to other folks who spent the same amount of money on other brands. I would recommend this tent for anyone who wants maximum thermal protection at a great price"

Differences from firstlight greater than expected

"Was expecting a firstlight with more waterproof fabirc. The tent has some noticeable design differences though, some bad, mostly good. The poles aren't precurved like the firstlight. This makes them hard to insert and I worry they may snap if I don't set things up carefully. I've seen this happen with tightly poled bibler-style tents from other manufacturers before. The poles otherwise have identical construction with the firstlights though so I don't know if BD has just changed their design since I bought the firstlight (2014 or so) or if this is an actual difference between the two tents. The vestibule opens from the bottom and side, not from the top, which is nice. The firstlight would open from the top and remain attached at the bottom, potentially collecting and then dumping snow in the tent. The more conventional door on this tent is a welcome difference. The wires that hold the awnings open feel sturdy and solidly curved. The firstlight's tend to get twisted and not hold their shape well. The tent *feels* much more spacious than the firstlight. As a result I thought for sure the footprint would be much larger than the firstlight, and put the eldorado side by side with a firstlight to compare but the footprint size difference was negligible. The eldorado is about 2" longer and no wider. The eldorado does seem a bit more domed though while the firstlight is a bit peaked, perhaps as a result of the difference in pole design (precurved vs. non-precurved). I don't know, either way this feels like a nice feature and doesn't seem to have come at too great an expense in any other department. It shouldn't be any harder to find bivy spots for it at any rate. The design of the pole twist ties inside the tent are plastic rather than velcro. This will be nice when manipulating them with gloves (the velcro was always a pain), but I worry about how robust these will be with repeated use. I worry they will break. Time will tell. Either way, BD shipped the tent with spares, and they seem easy to replace in the field. The tent fabric is much heavier than the firstlights. Haven't tested the tent fabric in the rain yet but I think it should hold up better. Breathability may be impaired but the additional ceiling vents may offset that effect. When packed down this thing is twice the size of a firstlight (black bag in photo is eldorado, green sacks are firstlight tarp and poles). It seems too big to be suitable as an up-and-over tent for a technical climb. It may however be preferable as a lightweight basecamp tent for short backcountry outings, since it is still smaller than similarly rated (4-season, etc. ) tents. Either way, this difference in bulk (if not the difference in weight) make this an entirely different tent than the firstlight. The ideal applications as a result don't seem like they would overlap with the firstlight at all, which is shocking given the nearly identical shape of these two tents."

Best 4 season tent.

"Absolutely the best single wall 4 season tent! I have yet to have any condensation on the walls even with two people, snow covered gear after a long exposed trek! I do own three other 4 season tents and this one is by far superior. I have only used this tent in an alpine environment. It handles wind so well, I sleep so much better in here without a fly flap flapping. This tent is so quite in the wind. The 3 zips on the door allow good high low ventilation. And the top vents honestly seem enough airflow in an alpine environment. Also because of the shape snow loading isn’t really a problem. Iv also found it keeps you quite a bit warmer then most tents as well. I would not use this tent in the summer. This is an above tree line tent for light and fast missions where you need excellent cozy protection. My only complaint is I wish they made it 2-4 inches longer. I’m 6. 4 and with an inflatable pad I do touch both sides. I am most comfortable solo in this tent at a diagonal."
