The concept behind this shoot was to visit one of my favorite places in the world, the Weminuche Wilderness, with my close friend and brilliant artist Forest Woodward. Our goal was to capture movement in the landscape: the flow of water, the whorl of stone, and the playfulness of roaming through that space with no real objective in mind. Vestal Basin is framed by dramatic, geometric mountains featuring unique landmarks like the sweeping ramp of Wham Ridge, the sharp point of Arrow Peak, and the serrated ridgeline of the Trinities. There is an abundance of water early in the season—a rare luxury in the area—which contrasts with the parched, smoke-filled skies of midsummer. The stunning pink and lavender hues of the Precambrian quartzite of the Uncompahgre Formation provided the color inspiration for this collection.
