What customers are saying

★ 4.4 · 62 reviews

Reviewers call the Men's First Light 2.0 one of the best active-insulation layers: light, warm, breathable and stretchy, great for winter running, skiing and climbing, with a hood that fits over a helmet. The most common critique is durability: the face fabric pills and shows wear from packs, seatbelts and Velcro. Others note a regular fit that runs large, long sleeves and so-so wind resistance.

Customers like

  • Light, warm active insulation
  • Breathable when moving
  • Stretch for mobility
  • Packs down small
  • Hood fits over a helmet

Keep in mind

  • Fabric pills and wears easily
  • Runs large; long sleeves
  • Limited wind resistance

Great hoodie!!

"What a great layer!! It can be used as an outer layer down to around 0 and up to around 15. Weightless feel and comfy as any old cotton pullover when wearing it as a proper midlayer. Absorbs and breathes moisture very quickly. Great hood Great pockets, nice to have the stash pocket on the chest. Packs down fairly small with Great harness clip. Perfect for rock climbing and mountaineering in the shoulder seasons or warn around camp in place of a light down jacket. The best part is the cut of the hoodie. The draw string placement on the bottom is absolutely perfect for my 5'10" frame. When I tension the draw string it tightens below my butt but above my crotch. This is huge for sealing out cold! What a brilliant idea from BD! Whoever designed the draw string on this thing deserves a raise and a promotion"

option for no hood?

"This was a replacement for a previous gen first light jacket. The hoody fit and materials are pretty close to the same as my older jacket (which I like), but I would like an option for no hood. I find it cumbersome in most situations I'm wearing it."

Amazing jacket

"Super light yet incredibly warm, bought to replace 15 year old North Face jacket that I loved but this one is so much better!"

— Hillel W. (5/5)

"Started pilling from the first wear"

— Ian (2/5)

Soothing comfort to make your sufferfests less-so

"There is no better midlayer (and I've nearly tried them all). It's warm and wind resistant but still breathes well enough that sweat doesn't build up. I have 4 of them."

Great Performance/Poor Quality

"This hoody is a mixed bag. Pros are this is functionally the best piece of active insulation that I have ever used, it has a nice cut and it looks great. The cons are that the material is not durable/not made for an alpine environment and it's way too expensive. If you can get one of these for 50% off and don't mind repairing it frequently, then I would recommend it, otherwise you may want to look elsewhere."

Nice Jacket

"It is so light and very warm"

Warm, breathable, and comfortable

"This hoody has been essential for keeping me warm in subzero temps - whether on the skintrack or roaming town. The flax color looks great."

the one I grab for everytime

"I've purchased (3) of these over the past 5 years. Why three ?!? Because it's my go-to top for insulation and comfort (w/silky smooth lining) and most applications: walking, hiking, running. . . As a mid-layer, it's replaced all others - sweaters, pile tops, flannel shirts used for layering, etc. Usually I'm fine simply wearing a T-shirt, this hoody and a down parka. Family members have tried like kind products from Northface, Arcteryx, Patagonia etc. saying I'm sick in love and this is a fetish I'll out grow, but until then. . . this is the one I grab for everytime."
