The whippet attachment is removable for mellower missions. This pole is compact and packable when not in use, and the extended foam grip allows for a range of hand positions, depending on terrain. With FlickLock locking mechanisms, three aluminum sections, and a girth-hitched strap, the Expedition 3 is ideal for any backcountry traveler. Extended EVA foam grips, a straight-edge grip scraper, and a tactile rubber “beak” for quick binding adjustments on the skin track all contribute to the simple yet useful feature-set of the newly redesigned Expedition grips.

"Took this thing up Gannett Peak and it was the way to go. It saved me from sliding down the glacier more than once. Really like how I can remove the ice pick and use it as a trekking pole. Saved me from hauling an ice axe for 50 miles!"

"Anyone who’s lost an edge on a steep run and started tumbling knows how tough it is to self-arrest before sliding all…the. . way…down. The BD Whippet is (in my view) an essential piece of insurance gear to prevent a slide from becoming an airlift out. You only need one of these (if you have two and can use them simultaneously, hats off to you, Wolverine)."
"Last year I was able to buy whippet ready poles, but alas, I lost them in Austria. So, I bought two each of a single pole with whippet. Expensive poles! But I reasoned that if I felt insecure on ice in a "no fall" situation, my buddy might also want some "insurance," so why not have two? Plus, there are other gadgets a person might want to attach to a trekking pole. Sadly, I lost the new poles when, serving as a ski patroller, I left them behind to perform a rescue using a toboggan. About an hour later, after the rescue, I returned the toboggan to its staging position, but the poles were gone! Bottom line, I currently own three whippets, but no whippet ready poles! All Black Diamond can currently do is sell me individual poles with whippets. I'll wait and see what they do next year, or I'll buy another brand of trekking pole with camera mount. I believe that's all "whippet ready" is. Just a standard camera mount. One has to place opposite hand on top of the whippet for self-arrest else depend on essentially camera mount threads for dynamic arrest. I'm well over 200 lb with all my gear!"

Stand straight and bend your elbow at 90°. Measure the distance from your fist to the ground, then add about 2 inches to account for the pole tip that extends beyond the powder basket.
