The Distance 1500 Headlamp

Long-distance lighting for long-distance days.

At BD, we’re a company of climbers, skiers, boarders, and runners. This means we often test the gear we make on our own adventures in the mountains. When it was time to pit the Distance 1500 against a real objective, we kindly asked our own BD photographer Christian Adam to put down his camera and lace up for the Wasatch Ultimate Ridge Link-Up. Known as the WURL, this technical skyline run circles Little Cottonwood Canyon, tagging summit after summit while racking up the vertical gain. To finish in 24 hours, Christian had to start just after midnight, where he’d need to scramble peaks like Mount Superior all by the light of the Distance 1500. Bright light

"I got this headlamp to run my first 10O mile race! I haven’t ran all night with it yet, but the times I have used it in the dark, the light was bright. Very easy to switch out the battery on the fly as well. I bought an extra battery to swap it out if needed in the middle of the night. I also live the counterbalance of the light, battery in back and light in front. When I have used lights that have everything on your forehead, I notice bouncing of the light. There is no bouncing or moving. this headlamp."

"This is a head spotlight more than a head lamp. Very powerful, if you need the ability to see 40yards down the trail or spot thing 100 feet up a tree. Very compact and I really like the rear light for biking during the night. I would like to see belt or pocket battery, see as with cold weather you need that heated element of a pocket to keep batteries at peak performance."

Great, but doesn't last

"This headlamp seemed great due to its features and apparent quality, but it failed me after less than two years. Unfortunately, I have had similar experiences with other Black Diamond headlamps, and they were previously unresponsive concerning some faulty split-boarding poles. I have some mittens from them I love, but I am realizing their electronics and more complex equipment is truly not designed for the long haul. If you use headlamps daily, they are just an expense. Sorry, but I will have to look elsewhere."
