Black Diamond Presents: Slope Ascenders
Follow Dorian Densmore and Mya Akins for another winter season of steep Alaskan spines, backyard couloirs, and deep adventures in the mountains.
Take a step into the half dream, half reality of the slope ascenders. Meet Mya and Dorian, two adventure athletes who pave their own way through hard work and creativity. They produce all aspects of content, expeditions and adventures entirely on their own. They specialize in being efficient and love tackling large, very time-consuming projects from start to finish.
This season, very warm temperatures and injuries completely changed all objective-based plans they had for the season. Instead, it was fully improvised, with spontaneous planning in every moment. Which worked out just as well as any of the best laid-out plans.
This film is about trial and error, making the best of what you have, and the value to being resilient. And a few super far out, dreamy, steep Alaska spine lines.
I feel super fortunate to be able to get out in the mountains with Mya, in any form, snow or no snow. It is always nice to get the opportunity set off with an intention to move in a specific direction and improvise. Learning and doing new things. This season we got the chance to improvise a lot, as plans were changing due to warm temperatures and Mya having a shoulder injury. But the hardest work can be really fun with a good attitude. And I would choose that over having good times with a bad attitude.

I found out I needed shoulder surgery right before ski season started and didn’t know how I would mentally make it through. We had plans for filming ski adventures and had set up projects for the season. While I was recovering, Dorian had to figure out how he was going to make some sort of project happen with not having each other to rely on for filming. Last minute and near the end of the season, friends came together and Dorian was able to go to Alaska and ski some of the most fun runs he’s ever gotten to ski! What we thought would be a season full of struggle was actually some of the best and most important moments for our lives. I ended up really enjoying and learning a lot from my injury, which was what I needed for my life!
