How-to Video: Fitting Black Diamond Gloves and Mitts

Mercury Mitts is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mitten My hand circumference is 7 7/8" and length is 7 1/2". The medium was the right fit for my hands; tight enough to work in but enough extra that I can squeeze a liner in if needed. I typically just use the shell over either Powerweight Liner gloves (when hiking if I have to put my hands in the snow) or Punisher gloves (when belaying) (both gloves are a size large). It works really well. The cuffs tighten up well using teeth; I really like how these are designed. The insulated inner of the mitts are the same finger-mitt inner as that of the Soloist Finger glove. If you have the Soloist Fingers with you you can bring just the Mercury shells and save some weight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Very Warm Murcury is fine mitt. I would have given it five stars if I wasn't using it for skiing. For gripping the pole I have found that mitts that putt more of the insulation on the back of the hand compared to the palm, work better at keeping the hands warm and the grip on the pole more secure. I like to use mitts for skiing when my work gloves just won't cut it anymore. These are very warm but a bit cumbersome for pole grip. Also I am not a huge fan of the way they separate my index finger, I want those fingers together to keep each other warm.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good but a couple of issues By all accounts this is a warm mitt and it appears well made. I have two moderate complaints. First, the handy leash that was on earlier versions has been eliminated. The second issue concerns the separation of the forefinger in the liner. It seems to give up more than it offers. The increase in dexterity is minimal over a standard five finger liner. For me the forefinger fit is uncomfortably tight and I have pretty normal fingers. If I don't use that slot and put all five fingers in the larger liner area, this is also too tight. So a mitt with an overall size that should work does not.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good as previous model (2013) The gloves keep me warm but are not true to size and fit small. Also, the cuff is not as roomy as the previous which makes it uncomfortable to wear my altimeter watch (essential equipment). Also, the straps that attached the gloves to my wrist are missing on this model and I relied on these while in the back country to prevent snow from entering the mitts while I was using my hands. The warm when wet Primaloft features are a bonus but the new feel of the liner is not as comfortable when compared with the previous model. It also looks like the leather on the palms are not reinforced the way the previous model was and make me question the durability of this product. Bring back the old features! 2013 model was legendary!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm, Durable, while Dextrous To start, my hands have short fingers and large palms, relatively speaking. I like the new design, with a dense fleece lining in the liner mitt. At first, these did feel tight around the wrist, but when broken in, they are very comfortable. The shell does not breathe as well as it would with a more costly membrane, but it is a capable design, with surprising dexterity for a mitt in its price range. A note on fit, I am unable to fit more than a thin liner in them, but I have had no need to go any thicker down to -30C.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally mitts for really cold days In my hometown during winter we often get -25 celsius and below temps, without the windchill. In these temps I usually struggle to keep my hands warm, but thanks to these mitts this is behind me. I've spent a dozen of 8+ hour days in the outdoors below -20 and they work great! On the other side, I went snowboarding in -5 and they were overkill. Forced me to remove them to cool down my sweaty hands (never happened with other mitts). They never got soaked. Nice dexterity, been ice climbing and it wasn't a struggle to manipulate ropes and gear. The only reason why I don't give it five stars is because it's hard to pull the wrist strap, the plastic end is too small to grip when the strap is open at it's max, it get under the buckle. Overall I'm very happy with these mitts!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got Cold Hands? Not With These I live in Upstate NY where this year (like a lot of folks) we set the record for the coldest February ever. Where I am, there were only 5 hours (total) during the month where temperatures were above freezing and many were below zero with crazy low wind chill temps. Unfortunately, I suffer from a low threshold to cold in my hands and have tried many different ways to combat it - fleece gloves inside of mittens, etc... all to no avail. I bought these mitts after researching all over the web. These kept coming up as great for severe cold. The reviews were not lying. My hands were never cold - even in -25F wind chills. In fact, the cold from outside and the warmth of my hands created condensation inside the mitts. Exceptional product. Worth the money and highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best mittens Bought these gloves for my husband for our trip to Tibet this December. The temperatures during the day were 10 to 15 degrees and way below zero during the night.. My husband was amazed at how warm his hands stayed. They are light weight and can easily accommodate a pair of silk liners to take photos, eat, write while touring. They have a safety clip so you can clip them together when not using and they won't get lost. Sizing is good and the adjustable strap around the wrist is a good feature. Highly recommend.
