Winter is coming. But before you head into this backcountry this season, there are a few things you can do to ensure your ski gear is ready and in working order. From firmware updates to battery changes, these steps are simple yet effective ways to prepare for another season of shredding safely.
Here’s our Pre-Season Backcountry Ski Checklist:
1) Make sure your beacons and avalanche air bags are using the most up-to-date firmware.
Manufacturers are constantly working to improve performance and limit the potential for beacon interference through updates to the firmware. It’s imperative to update your beacon and JetForce packs to the latest version before the season starts.
Download the PIEPS app to get the latest version direct to your beacon or JetForce via Bluetooth.

If you don’t have a Black Diamond or PIEPS beacon, refer to your beacon manufacturer’s website.
2) Make sure your beacon has fresh batteries & check for corrosion.
Simple, easy, but absolutely necessary. Put some freshies in your beacon and know you’re ready to send. Check for possible corrosion near the battery terminals, make sure nothing is loose, and the compartment door seals properly.
3) Refresh your familiarity with your beacon and make sure you know how to do a group check.

4) Check your repair kit and first aid kit, and re-stock anything that may have been used or lost last season.
If you don’t have a repair kit in your pack already, a multi-tool, duct tape, a ski strap, etc. is a good place to start.
5) Check condition of your shovel, probe, skins, and other related equipment. Check gear for loose fittings, bolts, and screws.
Give your gear a thorough check up. This serves two purposes—first, you may find something slightly loose or askew and can fix it. Two, it just plain gets you stoked for another winter of shredding.
6) If you’ve never taken an avalanche safety course or just need a refresher on your skills, get signed up.
