Rated 4 out of 5 by Lose some grip, but worth the weight savings! These are great skins! I use them with 120 mm underfoot skis. If you are breaking trail, there is definitely less grip than wall-to-wall skins (snow compresses across the entire width, and the strip "steals pressure" from the skin). But whatever, just make a lower-angle track. Also, if there is already a skin track or you're on hardpack, the grip is the same as wall-to-wall (because the skin sticks out 1 mm or so deeper than the strip, the skin sees all the pressure). Same for edging traverses. Overall well worth it for the weight savings, especially if your ski is wider than mine. March 9, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic first experience in deep powder Traveled out to Breckenridge, Co, over weekend with fresh powder from storms. The Split skins from Black Diamond were a perfect blend of traction when climbing/breaking new trail. Also liked the bag they came in to easily pack them up to keep clean/pack down while skiing down. Rated 5 out of 5 by Need to understand the application I debated for quite a while on getting these or traditional skins, including an email exchange with BD. And I decided to go for it. Obviously, these have restrictions for which skis they are going to work on. My skis are 130 mm (measured, not advertised) at the waist with a full rocker. I've used them in wet and dry and crusty snow and they have worked great. I've been really impressed actually. I have not used them on well set tracks. A full rocker ski is going to have less traction than a cambered ski regardless of the skin. The BD person recommended not using these on a waist narrower than 120 mm and I think that seems reasonable. If you are making fresh tracks and have a wide ski pick these up and save a few grams. Rated 3 out of 5 by Good to open fresh track This skins are so light, the nylon strip saves you weight. More when after 2 laps the skin gets wet and heavy. They are very good for long touring and opening fresh tracks. They have poor grip in rocker skis in a packed skin track. Making you slide backwards. Pushing you out for new skin track. If they get wet the grip gets bad. Glue can come poor at the point of the adjustable clips, the rest stays good. December 26, 2013
