Recently I started to step up my climbing game by learning how to lower my climbing partner into a canyon so he could climb a line that I'm not strong enough for - yet.
With this device I was able to securely and confidently lower my climbing buddy into a canyon and then change the system to safely belay from the top of the climb. It was pretty effortless - totally stoked that such a simple gear addition has opened up more opportunities for adventure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mitchell Simple and functional auto-blocking belay
This is the easiest and simplest auto-blocking device out there for belaying a second on multipitch climbs. Works exactly as it should. Lightweight. It's the only belay device you'll ever need.

I thought it was a little expensive for an ATC at first but after using it and seeing how rugged it was I had no second guesses on buying one. This tops a GRE GRE in my opinion. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Steve Best belay device on the market
All the other belay devices I have were either given away or are sitting in a bin deep in my gear room. Looks sharp, works really well. Excellent braking, great in guide mode. I did have the V grooves get clogged with ice once, but I smacked against my boot a few times. Problem solved.

The best climbing belay device. I'm using this one for rock and mountain climbing, not the newest but probably first one without holes on the sides of. Also for teaching adepts. ATC is the best one. If I'm comparing to Reverso (1, 2, 3) there is nothing to compare :)

by Daniel I don't know where people buy other devices
Between my wife and I, we owned an ATC, ATC XP, Super 8, and a G/G. We fell in love with the guide after some multi-pitching at Smith Rock, OR. I absolutely sweat by this thing, the auto lock function of the guide is outstanding and has caught multiple falls of both of us. I honestly don't know why you'd by anything else. We have honestly forced ourselves to use the G/G to see if we can like it but this is awesome as a traditional belay device as I lead and an auto-locker/guide as she or other follow. Man I want about 10 of these in case they ever stop making them!

One tool for sports climbing, multi-pitch, mountaineering, abseils... looks nice, lightweight, robust (limited wear after a couple of years of intensive use).
For mountaineering and multi-pitch climbing, I use and 8.6mm double rope with which the ATC-Guide works perfectly. To me, that the perfect balance between braking and the ability of belay dynamically the leader. For belaying a second off an anchor, it's also very safe and easy to setup.
I use it with my sports climbing rope (9.6mm or 9.8mm if I remember well) with which the ATC guide is fine.
Maybe the limitation is with the newest small diameter ropes. got to use the ATC guide with a pair of 7.6mm 'ice lines'. It didn't feel unsafe, but surely the braking wasn't as sharp as with the 8.6mm ropes. Maybe the V-shaped groove would gain to be a touch deeper.
Overall: very good.
