Description

An ultralight powder ski with the chops for serious technical lines, the Black Diamond Helio 116 ski eats up deep snow far from the trailhead. Thanks to its pre-preg carbon fiber layup, the Helio is light enough for remote expeditions and 10,000-foot days, while maintaining the torsional stiffness and smooth flex needed to charge through deep pow or variable crud. Early rise in the tip and tail improves flotation and trail-breaking efficiency, and an ABS tail protector also has an integrated skin-clip tab to keep your skins secure.

  • Floaty 116-mm waist with early rise tip and tail
  • Pre-preg carbon fiber layup offers torsional stiffness and balanced flex
  • Ultralight engineered balsa flax wood core
  • 5 mm beveled ABS sidewalls
  • ABS tail protector with integrated skin-clip tab
  • Optimal use: 90% soft snow/10% hard snow
  • Mounting with telemark bindings is not recommended

Helio 116 Carbon Ski is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Remember the carbon megawatt? Ya, not those. I like the carbon mega, just it has to be untracked. I have bought 2 sets of the helio 116 and 3 sets of 105s now. I may order a 3rd 116 for patrol work....Heres the deal, since BD went with new manufacturer, there skis have taken off. If you haven't tried them, you need to. They have a even flex, stiffer tail and even flex. Well played BD, well played indeed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real ski Bought these in hopes of a one quiver powder Board, hiking and in bounds both, mounted with kingpin. Went short 176 for a 5'10" guy trying to keep things light. Perhaps should have gone 186... Skied well in thigh deep. They're light, a bit stiff for true blower but that stiffness would be helpful in situations I'll try and avoid. Unbelievable edging for a Fat powder board tested on the way back in from the sidecountry. For 3d skiing 5 stars, go narrower if you want to carve though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is why you by a fat carbon ski My benchmark against the Helio 116 is the Carbon Megawatt 120mm, which was a great ski. In comparison the 116mm is a whole different feel with a more classic downhill ski feel whilst still being in a feather weight category, 3.3kg in a 186cm. I have skiied this ski over about 30 days of ski guiding in a very mixed bag of snow in Japan this winter. Warmer than usual temps have provided everything from classis Hokkaido blower to sun crust, wind slab and hard wind swept sastrugi in the alpine. I have mine paired up with the latest G3 Ion 12 and the ‘power to weight’ ratio of this is unreal, super solid performance on the down. The early rise rocker paired with a more traditional shape of ski with a mostly flat tail . The reduction on waist size and flat(ish) tails is a nod to traditional ski design that is tried and true regardless of the skis purpose The Helio is why you buy a fat carbon ski, to get the deepest turns furtherest away from everyone else. On the skin track they are very well behaved, the lack of weight is very noticeable esp. when breaking trail all day every day. This gives me the energy to keep smashing when others start fading. The super surfy tips are impossible to bury, even in the deepest days you wont feel outgunned rather that you have all the firepower you need. This is a classic backcountry ski that will have you laying trenches grinning like an idiot. I have spent a few days off the lift on them and they behave well enough on hard snow / groomers. Not its natural environment but the were civil enough. This would be a perfect ski paired with a tech binding for your classic Japan ski touring trip

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super light, super fun I skied the Helio 105 all last season and they have been my favorite touring board of all time. The performance to weight ratio is unbeatable and I love the traditional shape with just the right amount of tip rocker. I bought the Helio 116 this season thinking it would make a nice addition to the quiver, but so far they've become my daily driver. I've skied these around 30 days and the 105s only a couple - mainly when I want a lighter ski or in more of a ski mountaineering type situation. In anything soft, the 116s are just so much fun. They feel a lot like the 105s, just more float and surf. There is a bit more tip rocker up front, but the overall feel trends towards traditional. I wouldn't say it's an aggressive ski but it feels pretty stout for the weight (like the 105). There is decent amount of running surface which provides good stability at speed and with a heavier pack. Have skied them in powder 90% of the time (it's been an epic winter) but the few times in variable BC snow they did great. Even in a 45-50 degree narrow couloir, I was surprised that they didn't feel too unwieldly. I took a few runs on them in bounds on firm snow and they did surprisingly well. A bit of chatter but less than expected for a super light 116 waisted ski. I'm 6', 190#, and ski them with Dynafit Speed Radicals and TLT6P.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great on hard pack and ice. I have not had a chance to ski powder but it is early in the season. The ski works well on hardpack and ice. It looks like the ski will be 90 powder and 90 hardpack.
