How-to Video: Trimming Black Diamond Skins

GlideLite Mix STS Climbing Skins is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great glide, great traction, poor tip loop design I'm not sure what else you'd want from skin performance. These things stick, have excellent traction, and glide well. The one downside is the tip loop installation. As mentioned in other reviews, the screws used for fastening the tip loop to the skin are prone to premature shearing. I was required to use a metal file to "fix" a screw that broke before it could be tightened down. While this won't affect the performance of the product, it's still a design flaw. I'm sure the engineers at BD are capable of designing a screwless fastening system that would eliminate this kind of issue. Overall, a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best climbing skin on the market These continue to be a fabulous product. If you have good skinning technique, you can crank up pretty much any incline in any condition; they glide quite well and are the perfect compromise between efficiency and durability. I've been through countless pairs, and my estimate is that a pair will average around 400,000 vert before either the glue or the plush wears out. As long as you dry them out immediately after each use, there is never a need to reglue them because the glue tends to last longer than the plush does. I've tried most other brands and nothing has served me nearly as well!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My favorite skins I could tell how light they were right away. The uphill traction has been excellent. I like the lever action of the tail attachment. I have skis without a notch for the tail attachment but the lever holds perfectly anyway. I used to prefer skins with no tail attachment at all (but have also been satisfied with one other brand of tail attachment). I had never had a mohair or mohair blend skin before and I had hoped for miracles in gliding that have not yet become apparent to me. (I have had pretty cold snow so far). Overall though, these are my favorite skins that I've ever used.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor grip I bought these to go with a pair of Carbon Converts. The idea was to keep the weight and bulk down on a light ski with a wide waist. I believe that was achieved but the grip suffers to a point that potentially offsets any benefits. The point at which these skins fail and Ascension Nylons prevail is usually on dicy terrain high on the mountain in wind blasting cold. Plan on packing and keeping ski crampons handy if you are using these. As much as these reduce bulk and glide easy, I am not super likely to buy these again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from What is with the "screws" bought these for my son. There are 2 design flaws. 1. the tip width is just not quite wide enough for the wider skis. Made adjusting them and applying them difficult. 2. perhaps the biggest issue is that the crazy little screws used to attach the tip piece to the skin break off prematurely, making the attachment process frustrating. The slightest pressure and they broke. Either provide an entire bag or figure out a better screw design. we jerry rigged all but 2 #which did not break off#. Either we got faulty screws or need a better option. I was going to order two more pairs, one for me and one for my daughter, but have held off until I hear or see that this is fixed or improved. otherwise, he likes the lightweight and the glide as he is just getting into more backcountry skiing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Packable, sticky, great traction I have two pairs of the these skins (two different sets of skis). I haven't encountered any compromise in traction with the Glidelite skins compared to the heavier, bulkier BD nylon skins. And the glide is better right out of the box. Skin to ski adhesion is outstanding. The Glidelite skins do wear a bit faster than the nylon skins, particularly along the edges and they stretch more when they're wet. But for me, these minor tradeoffs are well worth the Glidelites' lighter weight and packability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from excellent product This is my second pair of mohair mix skins. The mix seems like a good combination of grip and glide. They are also much thinner and pack up much smaller than standard synthetic skins. I haven't had much problem with them getting wet and freezing or glopping up, even in the PNW. One complaint is that the tip loops can be a little small for really fat skis. You can usually make it work, but it takes some attention to detail when you put the tip loop on the ski.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sticky and packable These skins are very sticky on the skin track up and pack very small. I have always used the Mohair (orange) ones because i thought they stick better on the up, but i am convinced that these stick just as well and pack so much smaller. I put them in my jacket while skiing and these pack so small you can barely tell i have them in my jacket. They also stick to the bases very well, but don't feel like i am going to tear my rotator cuff peeling them apart.
