Description

From one-lap dawn patrols to 10,000-foot days, the Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins offer standard-setting traction on the uphill with efficient glide thanks to our redesigned plush material, which is now 20% lighter and more packable than previous versions. The Ascension Nylon STS Skins feature our patented STS tail attachment system, which provides up to 10 cm of adjustability for using with different skis in your quiver or for easy tensioning. The adjustable tip loop accommodates a wide range of modern ski tip shapes. We also gave the skins a pre-trimmed, bikini-style tail for reduced drag and weight.

How-to Video: Trimming Black Diamond Skins

Ascension STS Climbing Skins is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Subtle Improvement to the Earlier Model The Ascensions are a great purchase for those wanting an effective and long-lasting set of climbing skins. Without looking at the stats, it does seems that they're a bit lighter than those from previous years and they seem to fold-up a little easier as well. My only complaint is with the stuff-sack, which is sub-par based on my experience with other BD products. It's made from very thin material and the stitching for the drawcord hem was poorly sewn. It lasted all of one day before ripping to pieces. With this said, it may be a good idea to purchase a separate stuff-sack if you want to stow these in your pack between transitions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Still one of the best skins Still one of my favorite skins because they're durable. I will say that this is probably my 5th pair of Ascensions over the last 10 years or so and this pair lacked quality compared with the others. They iced MUCH faster than any other pair I've had (might have been a fluke)...but more than anything the little strip down the middle came off the first day. It used to be sewn into the skin, now it's just stuck on there? Currently quality is acceptable for the price, but hoping they don't continue to make changes. If it stays as is...they're still great. If they continue to make em' worse, then I might seek other options. But for now they're still hard to beat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor glue, poor screws My third pair of black diamond skins, I was happy with the others, but the 2015-16 skins have some unfortunate problems. (1) The tip attachment screws shear very easily. I was only able to get one screw to fully hold long enough to drive it through the skin. (2) The glue holding power is poor. Even upon pulling them out of the bag I could tell that the glue was not as sticky as previous generations. This became very clear when on their first day out I needed to cut the center strips to ensure that the skin would stay attached to the ski and not slide sideways.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good traction on the uphill but BAD GLUE I have owned two pairs of these skins for my splitboards. The first pair performed decently. However, the glue gave out fairly quickly (less than a seasons of use). I stored them on the skin savers and in optimal conditions. The second pair had horrible glue from the start. Regardless of it was really cold or really warm, the glue would not function well. It would always be fine on the first lap, but by the second or third, even when I kept them dry and warm, the glue would not stick very well. It was a pain in the butt. I will not be buying anymore BD skins

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Problems with screws Should have read the other reviews first. The pre-scored screws seem like a good improvement over the last version, but BD was too clever by half. Even though I was SUPER careful screwing them in, 4 of the 6 sheared off before they went all the way through and so I fear I'm in for an early replacement of the tip mount. They are much lighter than the last pair, but also seem to ice up more quickly. Have only had them out once and had several issues. Will give them a little more time but a little disappointed in the changes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best skin on the market After having rifled through numerous iterations of backcountry ski setups, each time using the Ascension STS, I have had nothing but positive experiences. This is by far the most superior climbing skin on the market. It takes some care to install - sure. After 500K of vert, yeah they need to get waxed. Tail clips break when I yard on them in a glucose depleted state of confusion. They even weigh a bit more than other models. However, the ratio of effective friction while climbing combined with both durability and longevity make this a superior product, and you all know it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't stick The glue on these skins is not what it used to be. In the last two times I have a skied, these skins have slipped straight off my skis. Once they slip then they get covered in snow and you are forced to side-step back up the hill. Other users of these skins have said that they use a Voile strap to keep the skins on. I bought these skins to replace some old BD skins which had never slipped straight off, only sometimes coming unstuck at the heel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from problems w screws stripped one and broke 2 screws while screwing them into the toe loop piece. Now I have to file down the screw point and the broken end because there isn't enough left to grasp w pliers to remove broken screws. Before & after I trimmed the skins to fit skis, the sides kept wanting to curl up off the skis. Glue didn't seem to want to stick. We'll see once I try them tomorrow.
