DEFY THE DARK

DEFY THE DARK
BD Athlete Joe Grant
Work. Family. Travel. Trust us, we know. Life’s commitments can pile up quick. But with a little motivation, as BD Athlete Joe Grant explains, the hours that lie on the outskirts of daylight can be your saving grace. With a headlamp and plenty of stoke, the early dawn or late dusk is really an opportunity to get outside … just as long as you’re willing to Defy the Dark.
Over the years, I have found that the daily practice is the one key ingredient to real progression in any activity. Beyond the physical benefits of getting out every day, dedicating a small portion of time consistently to something we love also enhances our emotional and mental wellbeing.

Yet, even for the most passionate individuals, work, family, travel, and a variety of other commitments are often disruptive to the pursuit of adventure, however small. Time and time again, I have woken up far earlier than would seem reasonable just to get my body moving, knowing that I will have no other opportunity throughout the day to get outside. Lying in bed, with the alarm buzzing in my ear, it can seem like such a colossal effort to get up.

But it’s always worth it. I often joke that if after my outing nothing else of note happens that day it doesn’t really matter because I’m already filled with a sense of accomplishment.

Time and time again, I have woken up far earlier than would seem reasonable...

Similarly, at the end of a long day of work, it can be truly challenging to find that extra bit of motivation needed to get out the door. I’ll make up every excuse to keep myself busy and shrug off even a short run around the neighborhood. Part of the issue is that by default I assume that longer and more is always better. I deceive myself into thinking that only significant duration out in the hills will bring contentment.

Truth be told though, you don’t need much to lead a happy life.

A late evening spin can be more of a release, to shed the weight of the day and center the mind before sleeping. I think of this as working on the periphery between dawn and dusk, slipping in a quick outing any time I get a chance. I feel as if I’ve been let in on some secret that the good life is found not in the grandiose, but rather in the daily process of simply getting outside, allowing my perspective to shift from the mundane to the extraordinary.
