FROM SLUMS TO SLABS
For Jonas Silva, climbing is not a given. He lives in Rocinha, the largest slum in Rio de Janeiro. Soaring above the urban chaos, however, are large granite cliffs. Through a local climbing school, Jonas has grown his skills on the walls above his home, becoming one of the best climbers in the school.

Climber Nick Rothenbush had long grappled with leaving a normal lifestyle behind in pursuit of his climbing dreams. Last winter he pulled the plug and headed south to the Cochamo Valley. Nick found not only a first ascent, but also a reminder of why he climbs in the first place.
